Two reasons I’m cheering Yahoo’s appointment of Marissa Meyer as its newest CEO (the sixth in five years):
#1 — hurrah for the user experience!
Meyer will no doubt bring her notoriously high standards for experience design and execution to Yahoo—which will be absolutely vital as Yahoo works to show both users and advertisers what is truly unique about the experience it offers. A refresh is long overdue.
#2 — yay women CEOs!
Meyer’s appointment brings us up to just 20 women CEOs of Fortune 500 companies. Let’s welcome that as progress, and agree there’s still a lot more to be made. Let’s also all agree to be very very impressed that she’s just 37 AND pregnant. A recent cover story in the Atlantic sparked a debate by arguing that women can’t have it all; Meyer’s story shifts us back into Sheryl Sandberg keep-at-it-women-leaders territory.
