Google has just announced the Google+ project — their big move into the social media space, positioned to take on Facebook. I checked out the demo and downloaded the app onto my Android phone and my Android tablet… but, alas, it’s a closed beta test for now. Awaiting my invitation.
To call Facebook dominant in this space is understatement, so it’ll take a lot for Google to unseat them (like integration with a robust set of cloud-based apps and a strong foothold in the mobile space.) But then, that’s what Facebook did to MySpace. And whatever happened to AOL and Yahoo? Clearly this is an industry where major disruptions happen with some frequency. It’ll be interesting to see it play out, and I’ll be diving in to test the waters when my invitation arrives.
